Interior Design Mistakes Can Be Costly: Here’s How to Get It Right First Time

We’ve all seen it before – a room makeover that looked great on Instagram but didn’t quite hit the mark in real life. Whether it’s the wrong shade of paint, furniture that doesn’t fit, or lighting that turns your living room into a gloomy cave, interior design mistakes are not just frustrating, but expensive.

When I renovated my first home back in 2006 I made more than one costly mistake so I know how easy it is to go down the wrong path when trying to style your home. But don’t worry – with the right approach, you can avoid the common pitfalls and create a space that looks amazing and works for your lifestyle.

Here are my top tips to help you get it right first time.

📒 Plan First, Buy Later

Don’t Let Impulse Buys Derail Your Design

It’s tempting to fall in love with a statement sofa or a gorgeous light fixture and buy it on the spot. But buying big-ticket items without a plan is one of the most common – and costly – mistakes we see. That perfect-looking velvet sofa might not fit your space, or worse, clash with everything else you already have.

Top Tip: Start with a mood board and floor plan. Get clear on your colours, textures, layout and how the space will be used. Think practically and aesthetically before making any major purchases.

💡 Don’t Underestimate Lighting

It’s More Than Just Picking a Pretty Lamp

Lighting is often an afterthought, but it can completely change the look and feel of a room. Poor lighting can make even the best-designed space feel cold or uninviting. The right mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting will elevate your design, highlight your key features, and make the space feel balanced and welcoming.

Top Tip: Layer your lighting. Use a combination of ceiling lights, floor lamps, wall lights and even candles to create atmosphere and flexibility. And always consider how natural light affects the room at different times of day.

📏 Measure Twice, Style Once

Size Really Does Matter

Furniture that’s too big will crowd your space; furniture that’s too small will make the room feel sparse and underwhelming. Getting the scale right is crucial, especially in UK homes where space is often at a premium.

Top Tip: Measure your room carefully and sketch out your layout before you start buying. Use masking tape to mark out the dimensions of furniture on the floor to see how it really feels in the space. And don’t forget to measure doorways and staircases – there’s nothing worse than a beautiful new sofa that can’t get through the front door!

⚡ Sort Your Electrics Early

Because Paying Twice Isn’t Fun for Anyone

One of the most expensive mistakes we see is having to bring back the electrician or plasterer because something was missed. Want wall lights but forgot to plan for them? Need sockets behind the TV unit but didn’t think it through? These oversights can really sting – both in time and budget.

Top Tip: Always create a detailed electrical plan before work begins. Think about where you’ll need sockets, switches, USB ports, wall lights, ceiling fittings – the lot. Planning this early saves money and ensures a smoother build.

💷 Stick to a Realistic Budget

Champagne Taste on a Prosecco Budget?

It’s easy to get carried away when designing your dream home. But costs can spiral quickly if you don’t have a clear idea of how much you’re willing (and able) to spend.

Top Tip: Break your budget down room-by-room and allow a little contingency (about 10%) for unexpected extras. And remember – clever design doesn’t always mean expensive. It’s about using your budget wisely, not blowing it on one piece of furniture!

Getting It Right First Time

Designing a home that feels like you should be exciting, not stressful. With a little bit of planning and a keen eye for the details, you can avoid those costly mistakes and create a space you truly love. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed or don’t know where to start, then give Greene Street a shout.
